How did you practice complex builds before getting real clients

What are you trying to achieve?

Hey everyone, I’ve just completed Make’s Intermediate course, and I’m now working on building practice scenarios for my portfolio.

Coming from a GTM/sales background rather than development, I’m finding the technical side challenging yet fascinating, especially seeing how automation can solve problems I’ve dealt with firsthand.

I’m curious how others here approached the learning curve when they were building up their skills. A few specific things I’m wondering about:

What types of practice scenarios helped you get comfortable with more complex workflows?

How did you approach testing and experimenting when you were still learning?

Are there any tools, public APIs, or dummy data sources you’d recommend using to simulate more realistic builds?

Any particular resources or approaches that accelerated your understanding?

I’m particularly interested in automation for sales and marketing workflows, as that’s where my domain knowledge is strongest. However, I want to ensure I’m building solid technical foundations first.

Would love to hear what worked for you when you were getting up to speed.
TIA!
Ben

Hey. I am in the same boat but early. Still going through course but also building some practical scenarios of my own. Creating bots for social media and messing around with entries in sheets and stuff like that

Thanks for your reply, Ashish. Playing around with sheets seems to be one of the better ways to practice I’ve seen as well.

How are you going about building practical scenarios for social?

I have been doing my own sort of scenarios.

Chat bots, faq bots, booking assistants, integrate sheets and docs in it.

I have not been social with it yet. Not quite there but you I feel showing some examples on test pages would surely help in upselling
