New Gmail Module Discussion

Hi Everyone,

I’m just interested to start a discussion on the new Gmail module that was recently released - specifically the new Watch module which now operates instantly via webhook.

I was REALLY excited when I saw this, for not only the instant deliverability but also the extra data it is now relaying, such as Thread ID.

I’ve been playing around with it, and I have some initial thoughts.

It does appear we now have a LOT more (all?) access to the email content / metadata, such as all headers etc. However, as a result, it does seem like this module has become a lot more complicated and less user friendly. For example, as far as I am finding, there is no simple ‘from email address’ or ‘to email address’ as there was before. Now, I have to use formulas to extract the email contained within ‘<’ and ‘>’ - same goes for the name of the sender. Also, I’m now having difficulty mapping the date of the email into my Airtable module (perhaps it isn’t seeing it as a date in the header format?).

Also, another observation, I’m wondering whether the watch module will chew through operations a lot faster than the legacy module, given it triggers with every single event, from emails being read to labels being added (I appreciate you can set a filter immediately after for the event type, though it would be nice to have this filter contained within the watch module itself). On the flipside, I do like this in principle - for example, it’s a cool prospect to think I can trigger an automation instantly by adding a label to an email.

So, yeah, I’m just interested to see if anyone else has had any thoughts or have found any interesting new use cases etc?

Cheers!

I’ve now noticed the new Gmail modules have gone and have been replaced by the prior version…
I’m guessing they’ve been taken off the shelf due to bugs or something

Dear @SdogEeinnarg ,

We’re sorry to hear you’ve had a suboptimal experience with the new Gmail version. We genuinely appreciate your feedback and are taking it very seriously.

Our goal is to provide the best possible app experience, so we’ve paused the rollout of the new Gmail version to new users. We’re actively analyzing your feedback and exploring solutions to bring you an improved app as soon as possible.

Important Information for Existing Users

The new Gmail version (V4) is now marked as Beta. If you’ve already added it to your scenarios, it will remain available to you. We’d be grateful for any further feedback you can share here on our Community forum or the Make Idea Exchange.

We strongly advise against using the Beta Gmail version (V4) for production use cases. Since your feedback may lead to significant changes, we recommend sticking with the previous stable version (V2) for your critical automations. The V2 version remains fully functional and reliable.

You can easily select which version you want to use when adding a module to your scenario, as shown in the screenshot below:

Once we’re confident we’ve addressed your feedback and the new version is stable, we’ll remove the Beta label.

As the Group Product Manager responsible for apps on Make, I want to assure you that we are fully committed to resolving these issues and delivering a superior experience. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Sincerely,
Jan Knettig

I’m just so pleased to see this upgrade for the Gmail app, it’s the kind of upgrade I’ve been wishing for for so long. I’m sure by the time you get it to a stable state, it will be awesome :ok_hand:
