Fallback connections keep Make AI Agent runs moving when an LLM connection is unavailable

Keep AI-powered workflows ready to run even when your primary LLM provider or model is unavailable. Set an alternate connection so your agent has another path to complete its work.

Configure a fallback LLM connection for your Make AI Agent, with Make AI Provider selected by default or a different model of your choice.

  • Set an alternate LLM connection: Give your Make AI Agent a fallback option when its primary provider or model is unavailable.
  • Start with Make AI Provider by default: Your fallback configuration defaults to Make AI Provider.
  • Choose a different fallback model: Configure the model that fits your agent’s fallback needs.
  • Keep agent runs going: When the primary connection cannot be used, your agent can use the configured fallback connection.

:ring_buoy: When to use a fallback connection with Make AI Agents

Use a fallback connection when a failed LLM connection should not stop an important agent run. It helps protect against temporary provider outages, timeouts, rate limits, and invalid or expired connections. If the primary connection fails, Make automatically retries the run once using the fallback connection. Choose a different fallback model from your primary model to reduce the impact of model-specific outages.

:gear: How to set up a fallback connection in Make AI Agent

In the Make AI Agent module, click Show advanced settings. Prompt caching works automatically with OpenAI models. For Anthropic Claude models, choose a 5-minute or 1-hour cache to reuse your agent’s stable instructions and tool definitions.

With a fallback connection, you can plan for LLM availability as part of your agent setup and keep important agent workflows ready to run.
