What are you trying to achieve?
I’ve a business that already has an active WhatsApp Business Account that gets messages from clients.
At step 5 on the dev Meta app, when I try to connect my existing number, the meta dev plataform says that I need to disconnect my number from WhatsApp to be able to connect to the WABA API. The problem is that I receive a lot of messages from clients so if I disconnect it, I’d lose a lot of possible conversions.

Do I need a number exclusive to connect to the WABA API in dev Meta?
Do I need to disconnect my number from WhatsApp? My employees need it available on cellphone to answer calls.

Numbers already in use with the WhatsApp Messenger app or WhatsApp Business app cannot be registered unless they are deleted first. See our How to delete your account help center article if you wish to delete your number.
So while disconnecting must happen, with reconnecting it, you can use the number as you do now. Yet there remains a good chance old conversations will lost.
There is a note about Migrating Phone Numbers, but I don’t think that’s your situation.
